The Newgate, China Horse Club and partners syndicate already have a Group I winning two year-old Dundeel colt this season in Militarize and they may well end up with two of them after his stablemate Tannhauser broke his maiden with a resounding win at Randwick on Saturday.

Trained by Chris Waller and ridden by Jay Ford, Tannhauser was last seen finishing fourth in the Listed ATC Fernhill in April, but with a recent trial to tune him up was fit and ready to fire.

He settled at the rear and was last turning for home, but unwound a powerful finish to charge home and win the 1400m contest by half a length running away.

It was exactly what connections were hoping to see and he heads next to Brisbane for the Group I BRC JJ Atkins in two weeks time.

“He’s a lovely colt and Charlie (Duckworth) gave him a good push before the race, he said he had looked at his races and he lacked racecraft and couldn’t quite execute, but his trial the other day was quite sharp,” Jay Ford said.

“He couldn’t keep up early but I just left him alone and he came to me and lengthened really nicely.

“Being by Dundeel he will appreciate further and I think going where he’s going to the JJ Atkins and stepping up in grade will bring out the best in him.”

A $425,000 Magic Millions purchase from the Milburn Creek draft for China Horse Club/Newgate Bloodstock/Trilogy Racing, Tannhauser is a winner at his fourth start and with over $100,000 in the bank will have secured his place in the JJ Atkins.

Tannhauser is the 11th two year-old winner this season for Arrowfield Stud’s Dundeel and was bred by Highclere Stud and foaled and raised at Milburn Creek.

He is the second winner from Luqyaa, a stakes-placed Exceed and Excel daughter of Group III winner Charmview from the family of Group I winner Shiva’s Revenge and Just Now.

Tannhauser has a yearling half-sister by Zoustar that will head into the same stable as her sibling with Mulcaster Bloodstock/Chris Waller Racing Pty Ltd paying $525,000 to secure the filly at Magic Millions this year.

WBF Thoroughbreds will present a Dundeel colt ex Stroak at this year's Inglis Ready 2 Race Sale. He was purchased at the Inglis Classic Sale. Find out more here.
